AT&T Wireless

Pros: EDGE high-speed data network with 3G UMTS in select markets; offers both prepay and pay-as-you-go plans; 30-day grace period.

Cons: Deducts airtime for unanswered calls after 30 seconds; merger with Cingular could cause confusion.

Where can I use this service? Nationwide, plus 115 countries.

What should I know about this carrier? It was recently acquired by Cingular Wireless, which will continue to use the AT&T brand for six months after the merger is completed. AT&T Corporation, however, plans to offer its own wireless service under the AT&T brand after the Cingular deal closes, which could cause confusion among customers. Currently, AT&T Wireless customers can access Cingular's network in their local calling area without incurring roaming fees; AT&T Wireless offers a free phone (after rebate) every year to existing customers.
